Writing & Editing

  • Music

I began my career writing for Melody Maker in the late 90s, while still at university. My articles included interviews with the likes of Snow Patrol and Idlewild.

I joined Kerrang! as reviews editor in 1998 and also began contributing reviews and numerous feature pieces, including cover stories. Notable interviews included everyone from Metallica to Blink 182, via Incubus, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Stereophonics, Slipknot and many more. I was a prominent early champion of the bands Biffy Clyro, Mastodon, At The Drive-In, Muse and Hundred Reasons. I was appointed editor in 2002 and ran the magazine for three years.

After Kerrang!, from 2006 to 2016, I produced music event programmes for The Merchandising Company – working with clients such as V Festival, Download Festival, BBC Music, Bauer Radio and more. This included interviewing acts such as Oasis, Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Nile Rodgers, Tinie Tempah, Emelie Sande, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, The Vaccines and a whole host of others.

  • Film

In the mid-late 2000s, I branched out from music journalism to write about another passion – films. I worked as a writer and sub-editor for Total Film magazine, DVD Review and the Sky Movies and Odeon customer magazines.

As well as countless reviews, I interviewed the likes of Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Robert Pattinson.

During a year in New Zealand, I worked on flicks.co.nz – the country's most prominent movie website, revamping the site and helping grow its profile significantly.

  • Other Writing

During my time living in Brighton in the late 2000s and early 2010s I wrote for a number of local interest publications. As well as sub-editing listings/property mag Latest 7, I contributed travel-style features, interview pieces and photography to Archant publication Sussex Life and its sister mag, Brighton & Hove Life.

These articles ranged from town profiles such as the 'legendary' 100 Reasons Why Horsham Is Awesome (In Autumn), to interview pieces with notable Sussex folk and visiting performers, and more adventurous briefs, such as joining the Eastbourne Lifeboat crew on a training session at sea.

In a similar vein, while in New Zealand (2008-09) I contributed much of the copy and imagery for the launch of the viewwellington.co.nz website.
